Uniradio, San Diego’s largest Spanish Radio Broadcasting company announced today that Jose Gadea, known to San Diego Hispanics as El Gallo, has joined the company as the new host of afternoon drive from 3pm to 7pm Monday through Friday on La Invasora (99.7FM XHTY), effective October 1st.
San Diego, Ca - Gadea joins Uniradio from Univision Radio, San Diego, where he hosted the popular morning drive program at La Nueva (KLNV) from the station’s debut in 1998 until his recent move to afternoon drive on the same station.
For eight years, Gadea reigned as San Diego’s leading Spanish Language morning personality, ranking #1 among all Spanish stations in most Arbitron ratings reports.
Gadea began his radio career nearly 20 years ago in nearby Tijuana on Radio 80, a station owned by Cadena, Baja California and soon moved on to Califormula (X99 Radio Formula.) Over the next few years, Gadea continued to engage the California Hispanic Audience through his radio shows on Super Q in Fresno and La Que Buena in Los Angeles.
In 1997, Gadea’s was hired by HBC Radio (now Univision) to host afternoon drive on their newly acquired FM combo in Northern California serving San Francisco and San Jose. His show quickly became one of Northern California’s most listened to radio programs among Hispanics and based on his quick success, Jose was moved to morning drive where he also achieved the coveted #1 position among Bay Area Hispanics, according to Arbitron.
In 1998, HBC bought the 106.5 frequency in San Diego and converted it to Spanish Language, moving Gadea down from San Francisco to not only host mornings but to also serve as the program director of KLVN (106.5FM La Nueva) and sister station KLQV (K-LOVE).
In San Diego, Jose “El Gallo” Gadea helped launch La Nueva with a new morning show concept “El Gallo y La Bola”. With a cast of characters, listener calls and produced materials, “El Gallo” was an instant success in San Diego, moving almost immediately to #1.
Recently, “El Gallo” moved from mornings to afternoons at Univision, where he again attained the # 1 position among Hispanic listeners, increasing the audience by more than 50% during his six months in that position.
A strong believer in live, local radio, Gadea is proud to join to the Uniradio family which boasts the #1 local Spanish morning show and plans to repeat that success in afternoons now with “El Gallo”
Ricardo Astiazaran, Vice President and General Manager of Uniradio San Diego, said “We are proud to have been able to attract a personality of the stature of “El Gallo” to our station group. Jose brings not only his tremendous fan base, but a wealth of experience in programming and promotion that we welcome. Combining his afternoon following with the strengths of La Chula y El Chon in the morning, we are confident La Invasora will dominate the Hispanic market in San Diego.”
